3 inspiring living room furniture ideas

Your living room is likely the focal point of your home, and the place you will spend most of your time. It’s where the family gathers to share experiences, relax and watch TV. It’s where guests are invited to make themselves feel at home.

For that reason, it’s important to create a warm and welcoming living room, designed to be visually appealing, offer the utmost levels of comfort, and perfectly accommodate your lifestyle.

But, where to start? Whether you already have a keen design eye or haven’t got a clue where to start, everyone can benefit from sharing design ideas and swapping tips when it comes to executing beautiful and functional interiors.

1- Small living room? Be smart about your space

Camille sofa - Design in 2016.

You only have to look around our cities at the number of tall buildings under construction to know apartment living continues to be a desired or necessary option for many Australians. Because the number of people living in more compact spaces continues to increase, it’s important to make decisions that will help get the most out of our spaces. For those with small living rooms, furniture choice is key.

Back in 2016, taking inspiration from many years spent living in Europe where beautifully-styled apartments are in abundance, I set out to design a line of attractive living room furniture for small spaces, that would simultaneously offer a sense of luxury.

The resultant Camille sofa, Felix sideboard, and Edgar table are proof that ‘going small’ with your furniture doesn’t mean foregoing a gorgeous visual aesthetic.

Each of these complementary pieces blends Scandinavian style with modern aesthetics, for a sleek and clean finish. Raised from the ground for an airy sense of space and light, the designs themselves are minimalist and uncluttered, yet the perfect amount of thoughtful detail remains.

Since then, I decided to apply a similar brief to other designs in the range. The Toulouse sofa is a slimline design with a shallow frame option, resulting in a smaller footprint. Perfect when space saving is crucial.

2- Creating extra space? It’s all smoke and mirrors!

Continuing our focus on the shift towards smaller homes, people often look to furniture and interior design options as a way to help create an illusion of extra space. And there’s no better way to achieve this than with a big, beautiful mirror!

The reflection of a large mirror such as our full-length timber-framed Narcisse will make a room feel much bigger, opening it up while beaming back natural light to brighten it up. What’s more, there’s no installation necessary, so what could be easier?! Need a larger version? Ask about our customisation.

3- From floor cushions to ottomans, get creative with your space!

A perfect way to make the most of whatever floor space you have is using an oversized floor cushion to offer an extra, super comfy seating option.

Our Phileas floor cushion has been designed precisely for this purpose! Available in three handy sizes, it’s a great family room furniture idea for those with kids and pets. It will also help soften up the aesthetic of a room, and can easily be cleared out if the occasion so requires.

Meanwhile, the humble ottoman is often the unsung hero of a lounge room, thanks to its inherent versatility. It can serve multiple purposes, from providing a focal point with a bright flash of colour, to providing an extra seat or acting as a footrest.

Ottomans add a softer touch and are a great alternative to a coffee table. If you’re not sure which to choose, you can find a hybrid of the two in our Zola range, which combines the traditional upholstery element of an ottoman with a timber tabletop.

Designer's Letter

This is the last newsletter before I head off overseas next month, back home to France for 4 weeks. Like many in the design industry, the last three years have taken a toll on my creativity and I’m feeling a strong need to connect with my family and take time to feel inspired by my home country. Part of my trip will include a visit to Maison & Objet and Paris Design Week in September. So keep an eye out in your Instagram stories for some Frenchy vibes.

Quadrant Console

Thought it would be insightful to share this early concept. The design embraces the philosophy of slimline aesthetics and minimalist appeal and combines clean lines and geometric elements, where angles meet circles.

Initially drawn at 1200x400mm, it would be custom-made and tailored to fit your individual needs. Whether you require a compact console for a cozy den or a larger statement piece for a more spacious area, this console can be made to your preferred dimensions. The design would also lend itself to a coffee table version. Timbers available are Vic Ash, American oak (both in a range of stains), and American Walnut with a clear finish.

Camille sofa

Highlighting a favourite: The Camille sofa.
A design philosophy that revolves around a holistic approach to comfort.

In 2016, anaca studio welcomed its first sofa creation: the beautiful Camille, named after my younger brother's son, who resides near the enchanting city of Paris.

Inspired by the mid-century design era, Camille blends timeless charm with modern sophistication, embodying the perfect balance between luxury and approachability.

My previous extensive experience in furniture showrooms provided invaluable insights into people’s preferences and requirements for their sofas. When working on the Camille, I aimed to create a design that seamlessly integrated comfort and aesthetics. And while others overlooked the significance of good shoulder support, I felt it was a key element and it was integrated seamlessly into Camille's structure. A beautifully shaped arm was also introduced, providing support and a comfortable lean for moments of relaxation.

When it comes to upholstery, we have used a variety of fabrics over the years, from textured wools to intricate patterns. However, velvet is by far the most popular choice for this range and no others have captured the essence of Camille quite like it. The luxurious sheen of velvet accentuates the sofa's graceful curves and intricate back detailing, elevating its visual appeal and creating a stunning focal point.

Being the first sofa in our range, Camille holds a special place in my heart. It symbolizes a commitment to achieving the highest levels of comfort and design harmony. Designed for those who appreciate the finer things in life, Camille invites you to unwind, relax, and bask in the refined comfort it provides.

Designer's Letter

As winter approaches, I think it's time to take a moment to appreciate the cozy comforts of our homes or make sure we create them. Picture this: snuggling up on a Camille sofa with a soft, wool throw draped over you. On your Zoe table sits a warm cup of cocoa (or your drink of choice!) and you have your favourite book or design mag in your hand. The icy winds outside become a distant hum as you sink into the luxurious velvet cushioning.

It's time to create the ultimate winter sanctuary where comfort and style intertwine. Let's embrace the upcoming season, knowing that we have the perfect pieces to keep us snug and content indoors.

Stay warm, mes amis!

This Loveseat boasts a beautiful and simple solid timber frame, providing a sturdy feel while maintaining a light profile and small footprint.

Designer's Letter

I'm thrilled to announce the latest addition to our product range this year. It's hard to believe that I'm introducing a new product again and it's only April. This level of expansion is not something that I have undertaken lightly, as I strive to only release the highest quality designs.

While the Flo loveseat and Toulouse modular sofa (introduced in last month's newsletter) may not be entirely new designs, they have undergone some impressive transformation that makes them more versatile and adaptable than ever before.

I can't wait to see the homes and projects where this new Flo Loveseat will go.

Besides announcing new and exciting things, and because it seems to be a bit too much doom and gloom at the moment, I also wanted to address the importance of taking the time to create a cocoon in your home as an essential part of self-care. By carving out a small space where we can relax and recharge, we feel better equipped to handle the challenges that come our way. Read on below...

Take care et a bientôt,

- HAPPY LIFE -

With the constant bombardment of negative news and events going on these days, it's essential to create a cocoon, a safe haven, in our homes where we can feel secure, relaxed, and positive. This is not only important for our mental and emotional well-being, but it's also a vital part of taking care of ourselves.

The beauty of creating a cocoon is that it doesn't have to involve a major overhaul of your entire home. You can start with a spare room or even just a cozy nook that speaks to your personality and makes you feel calm. It's a place where you can sit in a comfortable chair, wrap yourself in a woolly blanket, and unwind while reading a book, listening to music or your favorite podcast.

Good quality, well-designed furniture can play an important role in self-care by providing comfort, support and a sense of well-being that can improve your physical and mental health. Surrounding yourself with items you love can have a positive impact on your soul and will elevate your mood.

Here are 3 reasons why choosing the right furniture can have a positive impact on your life and improve your well-being.

Quality and Durability

Investing in well-designed furniture that is made with high-quality materials can provide a sense of satisfaction and reduce stress. You know you will enjoy your furniture for years to come, without worrying about repairs or replacements.

Comfort and Ergonomics

Furniture that is designed with comfort in mind will help promote relaxation, reduce stress, and create a sense of well-being. A comfortable sofa is an inviting place to relax and unwind, improving your mental and emotional health.

Personal expression

Choosing beautiful furniture that reflects your personal style and taste can create a sense of identity and individuality. It can help you feel more connected to your space and increase your sense of well-being and self-esteem.

OUR TOULOUSE RANGE IS GROWING

- DESIGN LIFE -

Toulouse Modular - Artworks by Dinusha Joseph available from the showroom. Photo: David Patston.

We have exciting news for those who already adore our soft and sculptural Toulouse sofa: a modular version is now available as a standard offering.

Toulouse modular - Art Print by One Fine Print

The same stunning details that make the Toulouse such a beloved piece remain intact, including the sofa's sculptural slanted back. This feature makes the Toulouse sofa an ideal option for open living areas and larger rooms, where its design details can be fully appreciated from any vantage point.

The addition of a modular option to the Toulouse sofa range allows for added flexibility to customize the sofa according to the space's unique constraints and the homeowner's seating preferences.

Available in two depths, shallow for those who prefer to have extra back support or deep for those who enjoy a more relaxed posture, Toulouse is now even more inviting than ever.

Both options are currently on display in our West Melbourne showroom.

Designer’s Letter

Coming from Europe, where apartment living is very common, especially in large cities, I experienced a number of more "compact" living arrangements before moving to Australia.

Although my parent's home was generous, I tend to approach new designs with flexibility in mind, thinking about how to create pieces that are not only beautiful but also practical and versatile enough to work well in smaller spaces.

But not all spaces are small of course, so introducing a modular option to the Toulouse range was a no-brainer. It's also perfect for larger families. Its slimline design still means it doesn't appear to be heavy or bulky. It's all style and ultimate comfort.

Come by and try it at the showroom.

Although many of you would have either been to the exhibition or seen the images on socials, I just thought I'd share my recent visit to Time - Rone. The artworks of course are exceptional but the amount of work and details that have also gone into the installation and the set decor is just phenomenal.

I'm looking forward to delving further through the catalogue that explains how it all got put together. The end result, the theatrical installation, is what we all get to see, but I personally love the process, the building, the creation, the sweat and all the behind-the-scenes that goes into creating such an experience. Did you know that most of what you saw there was actually built for the purpose of the exhibition, including the whole library, the switchboards and the glasshouse?! This is what I find truly fascinating.
